The
Tanzania Media Womens Association (TAMWA) is a non-profit sharing, non-governmental
and non-partisan organisation registered under the Societies Ordinance on 17th
of November 1987. Since its inception, the TAMWA has had traveled a long
way. It has several challenges in the course of its growth, the challenges which
through reflections led to more sharpened and appropriate approaches in fulfilling
its mission. In all these stages of growth, TAMWA has emerged stronger with a
clear focus of attaining its vision of an existence of a peaceful which respects
human rights with a gender perspective. Whereas TAMWA is involved in a number
of social transformation interventions, our core approach continues t be media
advocacy. Our mission calls us to ensure that media work stimulate communities,
policy makers, leaders at different levels, experts in various disciplines, the
government, non-governmental organizations, political parties, business communities,
religious groups and individual men and women, to take part in the fight against
gender based violence and promote women's development qualitatively. Therefore,
our success is measured by the level of awareness and action that are taken on
various issues as a result of media interventions. TAMWA is implementing
a five year (2003 - 2007) strategic Plan focusing on:
- Promoting
visibility of the women factor in development.
- Review of Law of marriage
Act 1971 and related.
- Eradicate worst firms of Child Labour.
- Campaigns
against HIV/AIDS and FSM.
- Heightening public engagement on gender related
activities through various firms.
- Establishing Information Centre.
- Institutionalizing
Crisis Centre outside TAMWA.
- Fundraising for the acquisition of a bigger
office.
